This antique picture frame dates to around 1900 and exemplifies the Neoclassical style popular during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Crafted from polished sterling silver, the frame features floral and geometric patterns. The frame’s intricate metalwork reflects the Neoclassical emphasis on symmetry, order, and precise decoration.
The sturdy dark wood backing provides stability and contrast to the shining silver frame. A latch system on the rear allows the glass to be removed easily in order to insert a photograph. The frame can then be securely closed again to display the picture.
While the original manufacturer’s mark is no longer legible, the frame’s craftsmanship and neoclassical elements mark this as a high-quality antique frame from the turn of the century, when revivals of classical styles were widely popular in decorative arts and architecture.
The leather strap securing the wooden support to the back of the silver picture frame has become detached, as can be seen in the pictures.
